Yes, guys I know I dropped the ball and I’ve been on a blogging hiatus for so long, but I’m back. Hopefully I’ll be more consistent but the way my laziness is set up… Lol!
Any who, with the season change brings new wardrobe changes! This can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time. I don’t know about you guys but I often get in a funk about my wardrobe and want to get rid of everything and start over. Well what better time for me to feel this way than during a season change. So I’m using this post to give you guys a few tips on purging your closet and ideas of what to do with those unwanted items.
There are a few questions that I ask myself when I am determining which clothes have to go:
When is the last time I wore this? I have so many items in my closet that I have not worn in over a year. If you guys are anything like me, you have convinced yourselves that you are going to pair that shirt you never wear with those cute shoes that you also never wear. Well if you haven’t worn it in a year, it’ll probably sit in your closet for another year. In the words of Keyshia Cole.. Let it Go!
Can I fit this… I mean really can I fit this? “I’m going to get back into this”. The infamous quote… that we have all uttered out of our mouths. Just get rid of it already. Guys it’s time for us to start living in “the now”. Styles come and go…. and come again. So I’m sure you’ll be able to find it again and because it fits, you’ll actually wear it instead of it collecting dust in the closet. Getting into the habit of letting go of that “goal weight” item can be difficult but it’s just taking up space.
- Is this versatile? With the exception of some unique pieces, I have moved toward clothes that hold more versatility to them. In my experience, these are the items that I get more use out of. The more clothes I use, the better I feel about the clutter that I call a closet.
Okay, now we know what we don’t want but what to do with the unwanted items.
- Donate it! Well of course, I would tell you guys to donate it considering I thrift so much. There are some benefits to donating to thrift stores. If you donate clothing and household items to the Goodwill you will get a receipt that allows you to get a tax deduction at the end of the year. If you donate items to Savers Thrift Store, you will obtain a coupon with a discount for your next purchase! The discount can range from 10%, 15% or sometimes 30%.
Give it Away! Many times, I allow family and friends to have first dibs on my unwanted items. It’s not unusual for me to have clothes in the trunk of my car. So if we meet up, feel free to ask if I have any because I probably do.
- Swap It! That’s right… throw a swap party!!! If you have never heard of a Swap Party, you are missing out. It’s when everyone brings unwanted items from their closet and switch them out. Swap parties are super fun because not only do you leave with “new” clothes, but you get to hang with your friends.
- Sell It! Yes guys there are some places that will give you cash or store credit for your gently used clothes. Just to name a few, Avalon Exchange, Clothes Mentor and Plato’s Closet are some consignment shops in the area. I haven’t personally sold items to consignment shops however, I have sold clothes on Poshmark. I recently learned about Poshmark through a friend who also loves to thrift. It is an app that assist in selling your clothing items. I like it because it’s user friendly and most importantly free! Feel free to check me out on Poshmark: @mothrifts
